Taos Clay & Wannamaker Pottery

Looking for a unique experience? Come to Taos' Community Clay Studio where you can mingle with some of the local potters and take part in a "Throw & Fire." As featured in the 2010 January issue of "Sunset" Magazine, this 2.5 hour class exposes you to throwing on the potters wheel and the art of Japanese Raku firing.

In the class, each person chooses a pot made by local potters to glaze and decorate. The pieces are then loaded into a small kiln where they are fired to 2000 degrees. While the pieces are firing, participants will learn to throw on a pottery wheel. At the end of the session the pots are unloaded form the kiln red hot and placed in pits of combustibles. As they flame up and turn different iridescent colors we freeze them with cold water and the pots are ready to take home. Prices are $100/individual, $175 couple, $75 each additional person.

At the end of the class, browse our attached gallery that showcases locally crafted functional, decorative, and sculptural ceramics. Come watch potters sculpting mud on the wheel or throwing wood into the kiln out back. Come check out all that's happening and be a part of Taos' creative scene. Located just north of town and in short proximity of the Taos Ski Valley. Visit the websites for more details and photographs.
